Saint John in Lateran, the Cathedral, is the site of the Bishop of Rome. It is the oldest Christian Basilica in Rome, the very first built by the Emperor Constantine after he gave freedom to the Christians and
stopped their persecutions.The tour includes a visit to the Holy Stairs, believed to be the very steps from Jerusalem, climbed by Christ on his way to be crucified
and brought to Rome by Saint Helen, the mother of Emperor
Constantine. Today the Faithful climb the Holy Stairs on their knees… Saint Paul’s Basilica, was built outside the city walls over the Apostle’s tomb.A fire in 1823, destroyed the old Basilica, which was immediately rebuilt over the same location and even more beautiful than before.The tour will end with a visit to the Catacombs situated along the old Appian Way. Faith in Resurrection brought the first Christians to build the catacombs.
The Catacombs were underground galleries excavated on different levels and
offered room for thousands of tombs, the bodies were located into the rectangular
tomb cavities dug one above the other in the walls called ” loculi “.
