Tour of Villa D’Este in Tivoli (30 km east of Rome)

You will visit the magnificent gardens of Villa D’Este in Tivoli, a XVI century architectural master piece featured by astonishing gardens decorated with monumental fountains and water jets… This Villa is worthy of being compared to any ancient wonder. After the recent restoration you will enjoy the gardens and the splendid Renaissance Palace that used to be a Cardinal’s residence. Ippolito D’Este was the son of Lucrezia Borgia, daughter of Pope Alexander VI Borgia, being a younger son he was obliged to follow an ecclesiastical career. In 1550 Cardinal Ippolito was appointed Governor of Tivoli and he decided to trasform an old Benedictine convent into a large Villa for his own personal use, designed by the architect-archaeologist Pirro Ligorio. Famous artists such as Federico Zuccari, Gerolamo Muziano, Livio Agresti an so on, worked here creating the majestic beauty of this Villa which was decorated with paintings and statues of all kind. All the fountains work thank to the original water system without pumps and engines which is a master piece of hydraulic engineering planned by Pirro Ligorio and the French hydraulic engineer Claude Venard…..The most impressive of all the fountains is the Organ Fountain. This can certainly be called a marvel, it has an organ capable of playing music on its own by means of a wonderful device that utilizes the force of the water…Length of this tour is approximately 4 hours
